Investigations Q/A and Glossary

GPI is equipped to carry out investigations throughout the UK. As researchers, we do not seek locations based on ‘thrill factors’ or commercial/media interest

Where does GPI investigate?

Since forming in 2008, GPI has investigated National Trust properties, private homes, estates, manors, castles, bunkers, military bases, POW camps, pubs, taverns and bath houses and will visit any location which the team feels warrants an investigation. Opportunities are endless and we welcome the chance to put our equipment and passion to use!

When should I contact GPI?

If you are experiencing out of the ordinary noises, voices, visuals, physical touching/pushing, objects moving or disappearing, and you feel you need help, we invite you to contact GPI. Our goal lies not only in researching the possibility of the paranormal, but in providing you with a clearer understanding of what could be occurring at your location.

You shouldn’t be afraid and uncomfortable in your own home or place of work. Whether you fear for your personal welfare or simply have a genuine interest in sourcing the cause of strange happenings, each team member of GPI takes every case seriously.

GPI has handled cases which held no threat, and the evidence obtained supported experiences shared by other members of the public. Sometimes it’s about validation and though we cannot promise results, GPI is committed to putting our best effort forward for you.

How do I contact GPI?

Visit our contact page or email GPI at info@thegpi.co.uk

Our GPI Coordinator will contact you for further information and provide answers to any questions you have about the process.

What should I expect when GPI comes to investigate my location?

After logistics have been discussed, the team will arrive to walk through the site, identifying ‘hot spot’ locations. Once the team has established temporary GPI headquarters for the night, they begin the equipment set up process which involves technical coordination of CCTV cameras, night-vision DVRs, dictaphone assignments, trigger objects and experiments.

A cup of coffee/tea later and the team go to ‘lights off’. Teams will pair off and come together throughout the night to discuss possible experiences and/or evidence found and any changes to the investigation plan as needed.

If you remain on or near site during an investigation, GPI asks that you remain neutral and away from main investigation areas. Environmental and human factors must be at their lowest (unless Mother Nature brings a surprise – it is the UK!) so the team can carry out a more thorough review of the location.

We laugh, a lot. Expect to hear this from time to time. We’re a funny bunch and sometimes it’s a necessity to break the long silences and intensity levels.

What happens after a GPI investigation?

The GPI team review possible evidence obtained from technical equipment, such as video footage, EVP via dictaphones and video, analysis of environmental factors such as EMF readings, external weather and interior temperatures plus GPI personal experiences.

An Investigation Report is formed with this information to record and outline the team’s investigative actions of the evening. As a client, GPI feels it is important to communicate with you after the investigation, to share possible evidence and make sure you feel satisfied and safe.

If no evidence is obtained, which can happen, or you found the investigation to be very proactive and you would like GPI to conduct a follow up investigation, you may communicate further with our GPI Coordinator regarding availability. If the team feels there is no need for further investigation and client/public safety is not an issue, GPI reserves the right to decline.

NOTE: If after a GPI investigation and evidence review you are still in fear, we will continue to offer our support.

What if GPI thinks I’m crazy?

‘Crazy’ is not part of the GPI vocabulary. Your feelings are respected and confidentiality is honoured at all times. Our job is not to believe or disbelieve you, but to take the time to listen to your experiences, using our knowledge of technical equipment and theories researched which we hope will enable us to provide answers for any fears, doubts or curiosities.

Will GPI clear my home of unwanted presences?

Glasgow Paranormal Investigations respects the practice of clearing homes however we do not conduct them as a team. If you need this service, we are be able to provide you with a contact who would be able to help you. Your welfare and peace of mind is of utmost importance to the team.

I’m concerned my neighbours will see GPI at my home.

For many, this can be a very personal experience. If you are worried about discretion, the GPI logo will not be displayed on its vehicles. Team members will not communicate their intentions with your neighbours or any member of the local public. Our presence at your home should not cause disturbance to yourself or those living close to you.

NOTE: GPI will not post an Investigation Report of your location on the website without expressed consent. Anonymity will be granted upon request.

What if a member of GPI is injured at my location?

GPI is fully insured. Health & Safety is carefully reviewed for each site before an investigation is held by the team. Hazards come with the job (aging buildings, pitch black darkness, occasional human error, ie two left feet syndrome) but we take the welfare of our members very seriously. If a location is deemed high risk, GPI reserves the right to decline on that basis.

What references does GPI have that would conclude you were a reputable group, compared to all the other groups out there?

GPI has always had a positive reponse from clients, some of which are included on the testimonials page. References will be given on request to reassure the client of the team’s reputability.

GPI is not an event company and do not carry out investigations for thrill seeking. GPI team members are very passionate about what they do and their professionalism is reflected in this.

What are GPI’s objectives?

There are two main objectives that the team aim for:

1) obtaining solid evidence of paranormal activity and;

2) helping members of the public, to the best of our ability.

The GPI website mentions ‘guest investigators’ joining the team on certain investigations. Is there a cost for this?

There are no hidden costs. Anyone who is invited to join as a GPI Guest Investigator pays the same expense expected of a GPI Investigator. This would include petrol, investigation fee (only if the location requires or client requested) and meals.
Due to the vast amount of emails GPI received asking how to join, the team came up with the idea of allowing only two people at a time to participate at certain locations. These are not public/group events. This is to allow others the chance to experience a real investigation, learn from and add to the GPI team.
GPI is a not for profit company.

How much does GPI charge to investigate?

No charge. GPI is not for profit. The team will not turn anyone down based on fees, costs, ability to pay. This is our hobby, not our job. GPI is appreciative of clients allowing them into their spaces for the opportunity to investigate and to help in any way. It’s a give/give situation and the client always comes first.

If GPI provides a contact for house clearings, how do they know that this person will conduct the clearing correctly? What if they just make matters worse?

GPI utilises the services of fully experienced professionals. The GPI Customer Service Coordinator will stay involved in the process until a client is no longer requiring help.

GLOSSARY

ANOMALY

An irregular or unusual event which does not fit a standard rule or law. An anomaly is something which cannot be explained by currently accepted scientific theories. Anything weird, abnormal, strange, odd, or difficult to classify is considered an anomaly.

APPARITION

A spirit apparition is the classic form of a ghost and the rarest paranormal phenomena. It is the partial or full (sometimes incomplete) form representing a person or animal who was once living and is presently passed on. Sometimes the apparition is transparent and sometimes it can look as if it were solid, but eventually disappears.

AURA

The field of energy that surrounds all living creatures, including human beings, animals and plants. Some people have the ability to see auras and can determine the health and emotions of an individual by the colour of their aura. Aura Photography is used to capture the aura on film, usually using Polaroid cameras and film.

AUTOMATIC WRITING or AUTOMATIC ART

To freely channel your higher self or another soul’s words, music, or art without the interruptive interference of the mind.

CLAIRAUDIENCE

Hearing voices, astral music or discarnate beings.

CLAIROLEOFACTOR

To have an extraordinary sense of smell, as if you could smell flowers before they bloom or smell trouble before it occurs or death before it happens.

CLAIRSENTIENCE

The ability to clearly feel yours and/or another’s emotions and sensations.

CLAIRVOYANCE

To have lucid mental perceptions and keen insights about people and life situations and to have clear visual mental images, pictures, to “see” auras and other psychic phenomena.

CRYSTALOMANCY

The art of gazing into a crystal globe, a pool of water, a mirror, or any transparent object. The person may put him/her self into a hypnotic state to see visions or to summon forth spirits or demons.

DEJÀ VU

Certain events and experiences seem as if you are re-experiencing the event or situation that has happened at another time. As familiar as the experiences are, you cannot recall nor figure out when they happened.

DEMONOLOGIST

One who studies and practices the art of demonology. An individual who specializes in the removal of evil or demonic forces from a given environment using the art of demonology. One who brings demonic forces out of their slumber to be cast away. Someone who uses the art of demonology to incantate demons for ones use in battling them.

DIRECT WRITING

Direct writing is when spirits actually write using any means. This can be done by slate writing or by pen and paper.

DIVINATION

To obtain unknown knowledge or future events from omens. Astrology may be considered divination.

DIVINING ROD

A forked rod from a tree said to indicate the presence of water or minerals underground.

DMILS

Abbreviation of Direct Mental Interaction with Living Systems. Used to denote instances where one person is attempting to influence a distant biological system, usually the physiology of another person. As it is unclear whether this represents an influence (see psychokinesis), a case of ESP on the part of the influence (see ESP) or an opportunistic selection process, the term ‘interaction’ has been adopted.

DOPPELGANGER

A spirit of a living person outside of the physical body.

DOWSING

To be able to find underground water and/or underground minerals.

ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELD

Is a physical field produced by electrically chargedobjects. It affects the behaviour of charged objects in the vicinity of the field. The field can be viewed as the combination of an electric field and a magnetic field. It is believed that spirits are comprised of energy. In order to speak, make a noise or manifest in the form of an apparition and need to gather energy to do so. They use electricity to “build up” energy to give them enough power to make themselves known from the other side. EMF detectors are often used by us to measure electromagnetic fields at a location. After taking a base reading of the location, any fluctuation by an EMF detector that happens in conjunction with a noise, sighting or EVP recording, might possibly indicate the presence of a spirit. If you know the locations of the natural electrical energy of the location and have the base readings, any fluctuation in the meters can be a valuable asset to the investigator.

EMF METER (or EMF DETECTOR)

A scientific instrument for measuring electromagnetic fields (abbreviated as EMF). Most meters measure the electromagnetic radiation flux density (DC fields) or the change in an electromagnetic field over time (AC fields), essentially the same as a radio antenna, but with quite different detection characteristics.

EMPATHY

Rarely used in modern parapsychology, the popular usage of this term refers to a low-level form of telepathy wherein the empath appears to be aware of the emotional state of a distant person. An empath may also be able to “broadcast” emotions to others.

ESP

Extrasensory perception (ESP) is the knowledge of external objects or events without the aid of the senses.

FAITH HEALING

To know that you and others can heal yourselves by simply believing it.

GANZFIELD

A state of mild sensory deprivation, characterized by the presentation of homogenous sensory fields. Thus, a person in Ganzfeld will have diffusive plastic hemispheres over their eyes while in a dimly red-lit room, be listening to white noise through headphones, and be seated in a comfortable, semi-reclined chair. Its use in parapsychology is based on a noise-reduction model.

INNER VOICE

Receiving guidance and assistance from inside of you.

INTUITION

Act of knowing without the use of usual rational processes. Based partly on subconscious pattern association of known information, and partly on subconscious psi impressions.

KNOWINGNESS / INTUITION

To get information without knowing where it came from.

OUT-OF-BODY EXPERIENCE or ASTRAL PROJECTION

To be able to leave your physical body and project your soul, consciousness or what appears to be your mind to another place and return via a silver cord.

PARANORMAL

Is a general term that designates experiences that lie outside “the range of normal experience or scientific explanation” or that indicates phenomena that are understood to be outside of science’s current ability to explain or measure. Paranormal phenomena are distinct from certain hypothetical entities, such as dark matter and dark energy, insofar as paranormal phenomena are inconsistent with the world as already understood through empirical observation coupled with scientific methodology.

PARAPSYCHOLOGY

Literally beyond psychology. The study of apparent new means of communication, or interaction, between organisms and their environment (commonly referred to as psi, or psychic ability), beyond those presently understood by the scientific community.

PAST LIFE RECALL

To remember or have mental flashes about living in another century.

POLTERGEIST

A general term applied to a variety of site-, or sometimes person-, specific physical phenomena. These can include temperature variations, anomalous sounds, and movement of physical objects. The word ‘poltergeist’ literally means ‘noisy spirit’ and was coined back when such phenomena were thought to be due to the presence of some sort of mischievous entity. Currently, poltergeist phenomena are usually considered to be related either to unusual physical conditions at the affected site, or to be related to psychokinesis. Anecdotal reports suggest that many poltergeists focus on an individual under some form of emotional stress.

PRECOGNITION

Pre-knowing; where non-deductible information about a future event is acquired.

PRECOGNITIVE DREAMS

To have dreams of events or incidents before they happen.

PREDICTION

To be able to predict future events before they occur.

PSI

A general term for para-psychological phenomena that includes informational (RV, ESP) and energetic (PK) effects. Psi, or Y, is the 23rd letter of the Greek alphabet.

PSYCHIC

Popular term used to denote a person who regularly uses, or who appears to be especially gifted with, PSI abilities. Also refers to general phenomena related to the mind (from Greek psyche).

PSYCHOMETRY

To touch an object with your hands and get information about the object, it’s creator, its owner, or its history.

REMOTE VIEWING (RV)

Ability to access distant or shielded information primarily of visual character, such as natural or structural features, via an unknown mental process. RV can include other sensory modes, such as feelings, motion, or sound. Some individuals associate specific approaches, or protocols, with RV. Other similar terms: remote perception, enhanced perception, extrasensory perception (ESP).

SCRYING

A term used to cover a wide range of divination techniques which parapsychology would tend to classify as types of ESP. Most crying techniques involve some degree of fixation on a surface with a clear optical depth (e.g. a crystal ball, a pool of ink or deep water) or on an area which shows random patterns (e.g. flames in a fire, smoke), the idea being that subconscious information available to the scrying will be manifested in their interpretation of the imagery or random patterns they see. Techniques using a clear optical depth are actually very similar to the idea behind the homogenous visual field used in Ganzfeld ESP research.

SPIRIT

Thought to be the soul of a human being or animal. The willpower and driving force behind the soul. The essence of a formerly living person. The energy that remains after the body dies. Because a spirit is the energy of a former living person, they should be no more frightening then the person was while they were alive.

SUBLIMINAL PERCEPTION

Sensory impressions below the threshold of conscious awareness.

SUPERNATURAL

Something that exists or occurs through some means other than any known force in nature. As opposed to paranormal, the term often connotes divine or demonic intervention.

SYNCHRONICITY

Meaningful coincidences that often are mediated by subconscious PSI activity. Our intuitive/PSI faculty nudges our paths into meaningful intersections in times of need.

TELEKINESIS, PSYCHOKINESIS, LEVITATION

To move an object or your body without physical means.

TELEPATHY

To know what others are thinking as if to hear thoughts in your head. Thought transference including the sending and receiving of thoughts.

TRANSMEDIUMSHIP, TRANSCHANNELING

To have severe personality shifts.
